This week, state lawmakers will return to the Capitol in Hartford for a special session to debate the merits of legalizing marijuana for adults over the age of 21.
The Special Session begins on Wednesday, June 16.
The bill had previously passed in the Senate with a 19-17 vote, though the Senate will have to revote now that it has gone into a special session. The House will also need to vote, but it is expected to be done after hours of debate during the session.
If approved, retail sales of marijuana would begin in May 2022.
The bill has the support of Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont, who in the past has been a proponent of legalizing marijuana.
“Pass the bill. Let’s go. Vote on it and pass it,” he previously stated. “We got you the most comprehensive bill in the country four months ago. A couple of hundred pages. We know how to do this on a safe, regulated basis for adults. We know how to decommercialize it, which is so important.”
